WORking with the useless and the lazy ones

Life can really throw a curved ball at you when you least expected it. One of my greatest pet peeves at work is meeting co-workers who are not pulling their weight, and you need to eventually pick up their pieces.

I managed to get an additional manpower for my department after a threatened resignation (well, it wasn't a threat as I really meant it) especially to cover some work while my boss goes on maternity leave. But horror of horrors, a boastful guy who likes to blow his trumpet but is incapable of doing anything himself was hired.  In a lean organisation where each and every headcount matters, it is very easy to expose flukes in the organisation unless you have a strong backing or connection behind you.

I thought by getting someone more experienced it will free me from the necessary coaching. However, this guy at the age of 40 years old is unable to accomplish anything. A simple rule of not closing the door during office hours was lost completely on him. Even in a multinational company, I have not seen anyone who owns a room closing their door during office hours. Except him. Heard that he went around asking if the lunch hours can be flexible. It is very clear that he wants flexible lunch hour so that he can go for interviews. But honestly, I really wonder if he can pin down another job with his capability.

He cannot undertake a simple project of gathering staff to sing some songs, claiming (and raising his voice to my boss in the midst of this) he does not know how to do it because he has never done it before. He expects personal coaching from the boss on the industry (I have worked for so many years moving from one to another industry but never have I asked for such lessons before directly).

He is a fluke - and he will simply drag me down. I wish he is out of the company within a week, and deep down I wish he will screw up (which is 99%) because he has never done anything for the past one month that he has joined and get a great bashing from the senior management. Honestly, I have never felt so shocked at the level of skillset a "manager" possess. He is the first. And it is horrifying to see a 40-year-old guy who is unable, unwilling and not motivated in one bit to learn and adapt to new things and environment.

He even watches youtube videos and checks his emails very often in a day when there are pressing deadlines! Gosh!
